Our cabin |
In order for us to get there, we had to stop a couple of times to ask for directions because the place is a little bit hidden. We were welcome by the owners of the cabins, and they made us feel at home since the first moment.
It was a long day for us. We got there around 9 PM. There was no much lighting around the cabins. We could hear a couple of animals walking on the roof and between the bushes (we are still trying to figure out what they were). And forget our big comfortable beds that we had for our first two nights in pura vida. Now, our beds feel years old.
It's interesting how us, human beings, get used so easily to the comfortable life, the luxurious one, and when we have to change for something that seems different, more natural, we usually tend to avoid the change.
After finding out that our cabin didn't have air conditioning, one of my cousins said that she didn't want to spend 5 nights just with a fan, so we took our rental and went to the downtown area to try to find a cheap place with AC for the next 4 nights. We found a hostel in downtown Las Fortunas, ate something, and went back to our cabin.
Our cabin had "3?" bedroom (I'll explain the question mark in a bit) , 1 bathroom, a kitchen, and a terrace. Bedroom 1 (where I slept) had one queen and one twin bed. Bedroom 2 had one queen bed, and bedroom 3? is the queen bed in the middle of the living room. There was one satellite TV. The kitchen was located outside of the cabin (we had to go out to the terrace to get into the kitchen). The bathroom had hot water 24 hours, and one of the things I liked was that we could park our rental toy right in front of our cabin.
A new day usually comes with a beautiful sunrise
As usually, I slept like a good baby (after i forgot my insect phobias). The next morning I went outside, and wake up into what I thought it was paradise. Who would have thought that the same dark place with mysterious animals running around was going to have such a beautiful landscape in the morning? (and what I think one of the best view of the Arenal volcano)

The view from our room |
The service provided by Felix (one of the owners) is simply fantastic! For $4 person we got a delicious home made breakfast delivered directly to our front door. And the owners are ones of the sweetest people I have met. Everything we needed (and more), they found a way to get it to us (like sticks for me and my cousin to go down a hill to go to La Fortuna river, which is located right behind the cabins)
How to say "bye"
The owners of cabinas La Catarata were so nice that we felt bad about telling them that we are canceling the next 4 nights. What can we say that are good reasons for cancelling when they had provided us with such a great and genuine service?
We spent literally an hour trying to think what to tell them (I even considered staying there and canceling the reservation at the hostel. After all, that place was not as bad as I thought when I first got there. On the other hand, I liked the idea of being for the first time in true contact with nature, and waking up with that view for the next couple of days was not such a bad idea after all.) One of my cousins volunteered and talked to Feliz and we put our bags in the truck, and drove to Arenal Hostel Resort.
My recomendations is that your should go to Cabinas la Catarata: If you are looking to be in true contact with nature, want a quite place to stay with your family or a big group, want to see one of the best view of the Arenal Volcano. Don't stay there If you are scared of animals, need air-conditioning, and want to be walking distance from la Fortuna downtown.
